Is a Geothermal System Right for You?

Today, manufacturers of air conditioning and heating systems look for ways to design units that are as efficient as possible, to help the environment and your energy bills. One of the most environmentally friendly units around is the geothermal heat pump. Geothermal heat pumps draw from the heat energy deep in the earth to give you whole-home heating and cooling at a smaller price tag. While they still use energy from the utility company, this amount is minimal and you’ll be sure to see savings over time that could even offset the initial cost.

How It Works

Geothermal systems consist of some of the same components of a conventional split system air conditioner, but without some parts such as the loud outdoor fan (which is a major plus). Instead, there is an outdoor loop system installed underground, which involves digging to install. A technician will either dig a long trench or a deep pit into the ground, depending on whether your home is best suited for vertical or horizontal loop field installation.

When it is cool outside, the heat from the earth is transferred through the loop field from some sort of transfer medium (usually a mix of anti-freeze and water). In the summer, the refrigerant absorbs heat from inside of the home using the refrigeration process and brings the heat back outdoors.

How to Tell It Is Right for You

Installing a geothermal system takes up a lot of time, and it will be an investment. However, this is one of the most efficient energy sources you can use for your home. And a geothermal heat pump should last decades as long as you put in the proper care and maintenance. You may even be eligible for rebates for your decision to install a geothermal system. As long as you have enough space on your property, this can be a possibility for you, but speak with a technician to learn more.
